UVA Basketball looks to get to 6-0 on Sunday with a game at The Greenbrier over in the West Virginia mountains.
Update: Butler 13-9, 14:39/1st
Ragged again at the start offensively – misses on the first four shots.
Getting to the rim – nice dribble-drives by Thijs de Ridder and Chance Mallory.
They don’t play D hard for 40 minutes, do they?
Update: Butler 19-13, 12:27/1st
Ugonna Onyenso has a finish at the rim and three blocks already.
Four of UVA’s five makes are at the rim.
The other was de Ridder in the paint.
Update: Butler 28-26, 7:11/1st
Physical game – both teams in the bonus, and they’re not calling everything on the Butler side that they could.
De Ridder out with an elbow to the face that drew blood, but no flagrant or even a common foul.
Dallin Hall out with three fouls – two of which involved him breathing on the guy.
Update: Butler 41-36, 2:54/1st
Butler is getting every call. Odom only gets two challenges. Can’t possibly challenge every one.
Butler is 5-of-7 from three and 9-of-14 at the rim. Need to guard at least one of those levels.
Half: Butler 44-42
Again, the stats don’t tell the story of this game. Not sure how Butler only leads by two.
Butler is shooting 53.6 percent, is 5-of-7 from three, 10-of-18 at the rim, 9-of-13 at the line.
Virginia is shooting 43.6 percent, is 5-of-15 from three, 9-of-15 at the rim, 3-of-5 at the line.
Virginia has four guys with eight points – de Ridder, Mallory, White and Thomas.
It’s getting tiresome seeing our guys get mauled at the rim with no fouls called.
Update: Butler 54-51, 14:52/2nd
I’m still trying to figure out Johann Grunloh. He supposedly shot 34 percent from three last year in Europe, but his form doesn’t suggest that.
His footwork on jumpers is terrible – he almost shoots sidesaddle, from his right tiptoe, and leans to the right as he shoots.
He’s a liability in the paint as well.
He gets rebounds, blocks shots and has length.
Update: Butler 57-55, 11:44/2nd
Chance Mallory needs to be the starting PG.
He should have 15 points in this one, as much as he has been contacted on shots at the rim with no calls.
The team just feels different with him out there.
Update: Butler 66-59, 8:05/2nd
Odom got a tech, which means he’s with me – that the officiating at this tournament across the board, but in particular today, has been awful.
Update: Butler 70-66, 4:52/2nd
Butler has attempted eight more free throws than UVA with four more (called) fouls on their side.
We hear a lot from the jackasses calling the game for CBS Sports about the Bizjack kid, who has 22.
Barely hearing about Malik Thomas and his 22.
Update: Butler 76-69, 1:43/2nd
Can’t have your stars – de Ridder and Thomas – both going 0-for-2 on trips at the line down the stretch.
Final: Butler 80, Virginia 73
