JD Vance blames Harris, when it’s Republicans blocking the Child Tax Credit extension

JD Vance, defending himself against his “childless cat ladies” slur, is now trying to blame the failure of the U.S. Senate to extend the Child Tax Credit on Kamala Harris, when actually, it’s Senate Republicans who have been holding it up.

“I think a lot of parents and a lot of non-parents look at our public policy over the last four years and ask, how did we get to this place? How did we get to a place where Kamala Harris is calling for an end to the Child Tax Credit?” Vance, the freshman U.S. senator from Ohio and Republican vice-presidential nominee, told Fox News host Trey Gowdy on Sunday.

The U.S. House voted by a solid 357-70 majority in January to extend the Child Tax Credit. A check of the roll-call vote even had Sixth District Republican Ben Cline voting in favor.

Bob Good, the Fifth District Republican who lost his primary to Trump-backed John McGuire last month, voted no.

The bill has been left sitting in the Senate for the past six months, and it’s not because of Kamala Harris. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Neb., inadvertently said the quiet part out loud – telling reporters after the House vote that he couldn’t support the tax-credit extension, which benefits an estimated 16 million U.S. children, because “passing a tax bill that makes the president look good, mailing out checks before the election, means he could be re-elected.”

That’s a good reason to keep working- and middle-class families from being able to get a few hundred dollars toward making ends meet right there.

Senate Republicans were able to pressure Senate Democrats to pair the bill to an extension of business tax incentives passed in the Trump years, but leaders still haven’t been able to get enough Republicans to commit to voting for the compromise to get the bill to the floor.

Now, Vance, as a member of the Senate Republican Caucus, could ostensibly work his fellow Republicans to get them to allow for a floor vote, which would in turn lead tp the legislation being passed and sent on to President Biden for his signature.

Biden and Harris have not only signaled that they’re in support, but they’ve made the extension of the Child Tax Credit a top legislative priority.
