NC State hit its first six shots from the field and had 15 points on Virginia on its first seven possessions Monday night.
It took a tip-in in the final minute against the UVA walk-ons for the Pack to break 50.
A wild ride from Point A to Point B it was, with Cat Barber, leading the ACC at 24.1 points per game, scoring just 14, and committing five turnovers.
State shot 29.2 percent and scored .786 points per possession in the second half.
This from a Wolkpack that scored 99 two days ago in a win at home over Wake Forest.
Those first five minutes, it looked like NC State would repeat that effort.
But the Pack missed some open looks to start the second half, fell behind double digits after an early UVA run, and it seemed that Barber was pressing to get his points against tough defense by UVA stopper Malcolm Brogdon.
Wilkins rebounds: literally
Isaiah Wilkins wasn’t much of a factor Saturday, getting limited minutes at Duke with early and late foul trouble.
On Monday, Wilkins pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds.
Wilkins also had an efficient game offensively, scoring six points on 3-of-6 shooting with three assists.
LP for three
London Perrantes, the ACC’s leading three-point shooter at over 53 percent on the season, didn’t even attempt a shot from long-range at Duke on Saturday.
LP was 1-of-3 from three in the first half, then heated up in the second half, going 4-for-5 from behind the arc, including hitting three in a row in a two-minute stretch late in the second half to put the game away.
Perrantes finished with 19 points and five assists in 34 minutes.
Brogs
Malcolm Brogdon put the aforementioned shutdown on Cat Barber. Score one for ol’ Brogs.
Didn’t mention that he had a game-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, 4-of-7 from three, to go with five assists.
Yeah. Nice night.
Another off-night for AG
It’s time to start worrying about Anthony Gill.
The senior forward had six points on 3-of-8 shooting and five rebounds in 23 minutes.
Yes, he played 23 minutes, and no, it wasn’t because of foul trouble that he played 23 minutes.
Gill had just one foul. He sat because he was ineffective. His plus-minus, in a game Virginia won by 20, was just +1.
That might be the stat of the night.
Minutes Watch
Brogdon played 35, Perrantes 34, Wilkins 33, Devon Hall 25, Gill 23, Shayok 18, Mike Tobey 17, Evan Nolte 4, before garbage time.
Brogdon, in particular, played some hard minutes, guarding Barber and carrying the offensive load.
