Inside the Numbers: #13 Virginia tops Syracuse

Chris Graham

virginia syracuseNumbers game: Virginia plays 10, but …

On the one hand, 10 Virginia players got into Sunday’s 73-65 win over Syracuse. On the other hand, four starters played 33 minutes or more.

Malcolm Brogdon got 38 minutes, London Perrantes 37, and Anthony Gill and Devon Hall got 33 each.

Jack Salt started, and got four minutes, basically playing to the first media timeout. And yes, that’s odd.

Isaiah Wilkins, who needs to be starting, got 19 minutes off the bench. Mike Tobey, who needs to be getting more minutes, put in 14.

Evan Nolte got 10 minutes, didn’t shoot the ball, didn’t snare a rebound, didn’t commit a foul or turnover, leaving just one bit of evidence that he played, an assist.

Marial Shayok, just back from the federal witness protection program, played five minutes, and if it’s possible to do so, did less than Nolte.

Shayok gave us what used to be called a trillion – his minutes played followed by a row of zeroes.

Only now, there are 15 zeroes, so Shayok just recorded an impressive and understandably rare 5 quadrillion.

Plus-minus award

Perrantes had a +18 rating in his 37 minutes, which means that Syracuse outscored Virginia by 10 in the three minutes he was on the bench.

By default, LP is your game MVP.

Plus-minus minus

Darius Thompson played seven minutes, was 0-of-2 from the field, had an assist, no turnovers, and a -11 rating.

The only minus rating on the Virginia side on the night.

Makin’ ‘em count

Wilkins had three assists, and they just happened to be the biggest buckets of the game.

Wilkins hit Malcolm Brogdon for the second of back-to-back Brogs threes that gave UVA a seven-point lead with 5:17 left, then found Perrantes in the corner at the 2:42 mark to extend the lead to six.

His last dime connected with Gill on the baseline for a dunk and a seven-point lead with 1:04 to go.
