The Cleveland Cavaliers led by 41 at halftime on their way to a 136-117 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night to improve to 10-0 on the season.
The Cavs are the first NBA team to start 10-0 since the 2015-2016 Golden State team that went on to win a league-record 73.
UVA Basketball alum Ty Jerome, the team’s backup point guard, had a season-high 20 points in 21 minutes, shooting 7-of-8 from the field and 3-of-3 from three.
Jerome is averaging 10.6 points per game, shooting 62.3 percent from the floor and 61.6 percent from beyond the arc this season for Cleveland, which is thriving under first-year coach Kenny Atkinson, whose up-tempo approach has the Cavs scoring 124.5 points per game and shooting 52.7 percent from the field, both leading the NBA.
“We’re playing fast, and we’re playing the right way,” Jerome said. “Everyone is making shots, and everyone is having fun. And Donovan (Mitchell) and Darius (Garland)’s selflessness is allowing us to play that way.”
Mitchell, a Louisville alum, is scoring a team-best 22.6 points per game, and Garland, a 2019 first-round pick from Vanderbilt, is averaging 20.5 points and 6.7 assists.
