virginia-newAccording to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the number of turkeys to be raised in Virginia in 2014 is expected to total 16 million, up three percent from the 15.5 million raised in 2013. These results were based on a September 1 survey conducted in major turkey-producing states by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Turkeys raised in the United States during 2014 is forecasted at 235 million, down two percent from the number raised during 2013. The largest turkey-producing state is Minnesota, at 45 million turkeys, up two percent from the previous year. Arkansas produced 29 million turkeys, which is up four percent from the previous year. North Carolina decreased by 18 percent from last year, producing 28 million turkeys.

Virginia ranks fifth in the nation for the number of turkeys raised in the state. According to the most recent USDA Census of Agriculture in 2012, turkeys are Virginia’s fourth largest agricultural commodity.
