derek hyraToday Derek Hyra, Democratic nomination candidate for Virginia’s Eighth Congressional District, announced the release of a number of policy white papers proposing substantive ideas to strengthen Northern Virginia communities and our country. These papers can be found on his campaign site: www.hyra2014.com.

“Campaigns should not be about money – they should be about people, ideals, and ideas. Who has the best policy proposals and will most effectively represent the people’s interest should be the benchmarks for a successful candidate,” said Hyra.

“That is why I am excited to let you know that today we have added many of our team’s policy white papers to our website. I am so proud of the policy experts who helped in developing these innovative and practical ideas that will address our 21st century challenges and move our country forward.”

The white papers touch on many issues important to Northern Virginia, including job creation and growing, to stabilizing the housing market, to early childhood and higher education, to social and economic equity. These ideas, if implemented, will help our nation refresh the American Dream.

Hyra is an associate professor of urban affairs planning at Virginia Tech, and a nationally-recognized expert in economic and community development, housing and metropolitan policy. He has served in the U.S. Treasury and Housing and Urban Development departments, and as President Obama’s appointee to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Council on Underserved Communities. Hyra spent four years on the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, including serving as chair, and is a current member of the Alexandria Planning Commission.
