Democrats hit Mark Obenshain on transvaginal ultrasounds

Remember the transvaginal ultrasound debates that riveted the Virginia General Assembly in 2012? Virginia Democrats want you to, and want you to remember where Republican attorney general nominee Mark Obenshain was, basically in the middle of it all.

“Mark Obenshain’s anti-women’s health record is so extreme, he not only voted for legislation to force a transvaginal ultrasound on Virginia women before they can have an abortion, he called it a ‘common sense proposal,’” said Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Charniele Herring. “Virginia women cannot afford another attorney general who would force his extreme agenda into decisions that should be between us and our doctors.”

Obenshain continues to be locked up in a tight race with Democrat Mark Herring, despite the big leads enjoyed by Herring’s ticketmates, gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe and lieutenant governor nominee Ralph Northam, over their GOP opponents.

Republicans have not lost an attorney general race since jim gilmore won election as AG in 1993.

Democrats, trying to break the hold of Republicans on the job, have been hitting Obenshain, a Harrisonburg state senator, on women’s health issues hard in recent weeks, most recently with the tv spot called “Common Sense,” highlighting the transvaginal ultrasound votes in 2012.
