Charlottesville Police waiting for phone, vehicle data in fatal crash investigation

The Charlottesville Police Department continues to investigate the fatal crash on Oct. 3 that resulted in the death of Mamawa Simai, 64.

Simai died after being struck in a crosswalk at South First Street and Elliot Avenue at 7:25 p.m.

Matthew Christian Kozub, 19, of Louisa County, was the driver of the involved vehicle.

He was taken into custody for an unrelated assault warrant out of Louisa County. Kozub did remain on the scene after the crash.

The police department’s traffic, criminal investigations and forensic units are working to gather the facts to present to the Commonwealth Attorney.

Investigators are waiting for data download information from the involved vehicle and results from Kozub’s cellular phone.

The investigation is expected to be complete within the next week.
