City Manager Maurice Jones announced today that, effective August 1, Leslie Beauregard and Mike Murphy will be promoted to Assistant City Managers for the City of Charlottesville. The two promotions will fill the vacant Assistant City Manager and COO/CFO positions and will divide operational duties between Murphy and Beauregard.
The City’s COO/CFO, Aubrey Watts announced his retirement after 52 years of public service in May of this year. Watts will leave that role July 31, but will work on a part-time basis on special projects for the City.
“This move will return the Manager’s Office to a structure that is very common in localities such as ours,” said Jones. “Each ACM will have different responsibilities and provide operational oversight for our departments. Ms. Beauregard and Mr. Murphy are talented, dedicated public servants committed to our organization and our community. I look forward to working with them both to ensure we continue to provide high quality services to the residents of Charlottesville.”
Beauregard began working for the City of Charlottesville as Budget Manager in 2003 and was promoted to Director of Budget and Performance Management in 2007. Prior to coming to Charlottesville she served as a management and legislative analyst in the City of Hampton, Virginia. In addition to her role as ACM, Beauregard will continue to direct the City’s budgeting, strategic planning and performance measurement processes.
“I am honored and humbled by this new role,” said Beauregard. “There are big shoes to fill in this organization and will work hard to uphold the high standards set by my predecessors.”
Murphy joined City of Charlottesville staff in 1995 working in Community Attention. He served as Director of Community Attention beginning in 2003 and became Director of Human Services when the department was established in 2010.
Murphy assumed the role of Interim Assistant City Manager in March 2015.
“It’s been a privilege working for the City of Charlottesville for the past 20 years,” said Murphy. “I am excited for the opportunity to work with city staff and our residents in this new position and support our services.”
The City will begin a search for a new Director of Human Services this fall.
