The Science Museum of Virginia is celebrating a special anniversary this holiday season – the 5th year of Fruitcake Science. During this quirky, annual holiday event, the Museum will conduct unconventional experiments on everyone’s least favorite holiday treat, the fruitcake.
The maligned pastry, which was once outlawed for being sinfully sweet, will undergo the rigors of scientific testing from December 26 – 30. Find out what happens to a fruitcake when Museum scientists drop it down to -321°F with liquid Nitrogen and use a blowtorch to reach temperatures over 3,000°F.
“After five years and over 5,000,000 calories tested, we’re bringing back our best fruitcake experiments,” explains Richard Conti, Chief Wonder Officer, Science Museum of Virginia. “Guests will see action-packed live science demonstrations, including fan favorites from years past, and enjoy a few new surprises as well.”
Guests are invited to share their hypothesis, observe the results and those who are brave enough can put their taste buds to the test by sampling fruitcakes in the Museum’s Boost! kitchen. Other special activities include a testing a fruitcake-themed Newton’s cradle and dropping a fruitcake from a 5-story stairwell.
