Cavs at full strength for Iowa State?

Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett might have senior co-captains Mike Scott and Will Sherrill both back and at full strength for the Cavs’ home game Thursday night with Iowa State.

Sherrill went down with a fibula fracture in the second half of UVa.’s 87-79 upset of Minnesota on Nov. 29. Scott suffered an injured ankle in practice over the team’s December exam break and underwent a minor surgical procedure on Dec. 16 before returning to score 12 points and pull down eight rebounds in Virginia’s 59-53 loss to Seattle on Dec. 23.

Scott is the team’s leading scorer (15.9 points per game) and leading rebounder (10.2 rebounds per game). Sherrill, a former walkon, is averaging 6.3 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the field and 54.5 percent shooting from three-point range.

Both took part in practice on Monday. Bennett told reporters that Sherrill took part in “half to three-quarters” of the Monday practice. “You could see he wasn’t himself in terms of moving around, but he did more than he obviously had up to that point,” Bennett said.

Scott still wasn’t at full strength at the Monday practice, Bennett said. “I don’t how much of it is confidence … or if it just takes a while to get all of that irritation out,” Bennett said.

Virginia has stumbled a bit of late after posting back-to-back road wins over Minnesota and Virginia Tech, limping to an ugly 10-point home win over Radford and a one-point win over one-win Norfolk State before the loss to Seattle.

“We need to be healthy and at the best of our abilities to be full strength. That’s important for us,” Bennett said.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
