Implementing AI in everyday classes
Artificial Intelligence has become increasingly important in the world’s day-to-day functioning, from economy to education, or from movie-watching to even shopping and dating. AI-powered technology is the no1 cause of technology demand and development in the last two years, hence the predictions that by the year 2021, all of the technology will be AI-powered. This sounds undeniably exciting, but many tend to overlook the consequences of such a drastic change. For example, artificial intelligence is mainly affecting the world’s economy; therefore, many believe that future economic growth depends on the changes introduced in the education system. And that itself might be a massive change for the students and teachers around the world.
It shouldn’t be surprising, however, that many educational institutions and academics have already hopped on the AI train, and started introducing AI in the classroom. History has always shown that humans are capable of adopting every single tool out there, and AI is one of them too, especially when it comes to our thirst for knowledge.
The education system in the US, Europe, and Asia have been introducing AI-powered learning and teaching tools for the past few years, and even though the phase is still experimental, the outcomes have been fantastic. By using neuroscience and the way our brains are wired when it comes to learning, AI-powered technology is being used in countless ways in the modern-day education. So, let’s take a closer look at some examples of AI in learning and teaching.

This program is used as a supplement to the teacher, and overall increases the effectiveness of old-school teaching. Artificial intelligence in education does not, however, replace the human teacher, nor could it do on an emphatic and emotional level, but it sure helps when it comes to essay-grading and the assessment of student’s work. AI education programs, like Blended learning, enable the teachers to use AI-powered software that teaches skills and pair learners with human teachers, which in turn, helps students perform better and learn more efficiently. This could also be characterized as personalized learning.
Blended learning, in collaboration with AI education, enables a system of metacognition measurement. Metacognition stands for a student’s awareness of how well they are performing in class and how well they are learning. As a result, Blended learning and AI education become an independent instructor instead of learning supplement. Nevertheless, both become a supplement instead to the teachers themselves, as they extend their abilities in passing the knowledge.
Overall, personalized learning is based on the individual student’s needs. When in collaboration with artificial intelligence, personalized learning becomes a whole new experience for students. AI enables the teacher to provide individualized and personalized lessons for every individual student while leading a regular class. An excellent example of this form of learning is a school in Massachusetts where the teachers use AI tools to help students learn and stay engaged. Students with autism also find these tools extremely helpful in everyday class. The tools this school provides are Brain Power’s Google Glasses and ‘learning eye’ technology that uses Amazon’s Deep Lens Cameras with machine learning mechanisms.
Personalized learning is using the currently developing intelligent instruction design and digital platforms to provide learning, teaching, and feedback to the students who usually face difficulties in staying engaged in the class or have special needs. Artificial intelligence in personalized learning also provides each student with a variety of learning challenges that are suitable for them; it also recognizes the gaps in student’s knowledge, areas and fields the student needs to cover and, moreover, introduces new and exciting topics that are appropriate for the student as well.
AI systems in personalized learning are also being used in several different ways. For example, numerous apps help students deal with root-cause analysis, known as the Fishbone diagram, in studying, which depends on the input data for each class. Also, online mathematics studying, for example, can also be significantly more manageable for the students due to AI systems, apps and online courses. Not to mention the fact that AI now enables students around the world take classes of foreign teachers because of the so-called Presentation Translator. This is a free plug-in for Power Point that creates subtitles in real time for what the teacher is saying.
Virtual Learning Experience
AI in education systems is now making it possible for the students to have an entirely new and unique learning experience when it comes to, for example, learning foreign languages. The best-known illustration of this AI implementation would be The Mandarin Project. This project is a collaboration between New York’s RPI and the tech giant IBM, which is based around the idea of placing students in a virtual world where they can experience first-hand the Mandarin language in simulated situations and locations of China. Students can learn and practice their knowledge and skills of Mandarin language without traveling to China, as well as, without the pressure of making mistakes and embarrassment if they do make mistakes. This virtual world takes place in the high-tech “cognitive immersive room,” which is actually a classroom with a 360-degree floor-to-ceiling screen. The characters, locations, and situations are AI-powered and animated.
Virtual Teaching Assistant
At the Georgia Institute of Technology, AI teaching assistant is being used in a computing course and the undergraduate program. The first AI teaching assistant at the Institute is Jill Watson, a knowledge-based AI assistant that serves the purpose of handling forum posts of the students enrolled in the online computing courses for the MA of Science. Ever since Jill was introduced to the students, and the public, AI teaching assistants have drawn a lot of attention and interest in the course itself. The students have explained how, in the beginning, they could not recognize that the teacher assistant is AI powered, and they were amazed by how helpful Jill has been.
So, what about the rest of the world that does not have access to AI-powered technology in class?
