In previous columns on this date I have presented the historic evidence clearly establishing that the first Thanksgiving celebration took place at Berkeley Plantation in Virginia on Dec. 4, 1619 – several years before the Pilgrims ever left England to come to Plymouth Colony.

DuPont Community Credit Union (DCCU) was recently recognized with three awards for service to the local community from both the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). DCCU was ranked first in the state with a Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award for DCCU’s impact on the local community.

UVa. broke open a tight game with a 23-0 first-half run en route to blasting Hampton, 69-40, on Tuesday in Charlottesville. The Cavs (5-1) got off to a sluggish start against the Pirates. A jumper by Hampton’s Dionte Adams at the 9:59 mark tied the game at 16. A Joe Harris three-pointer on Virginia’s next possession gave UVa. the lead, but it was still 19-16 ‘Hoos at the 7:48 media timeout.

Republican Mark Obenshain will formally request a recount of the state attorney general race that he lost to Democrat Mark Herring by a scant 165 votes of the more than 2.2 million votes cast in the Nov. 5 statewide election.

An approaching winter storm is projected to bring Virginia snow to the west and two to four inches of rain in Richmond and surrounding areas today and tomorrow, likely creating havoc for holiday travelers. The storm, Boreas, made its grand entrance in California and pushed its deadly path as far as Texas creating treacherous traffic conditions.

The Waynesboro YMCA year-round competitive swim team (SMAC) had the largest turnout in history for the Fall Invite at the Waynesboro Y and used the excitement of the large crowd to set three new SMAC team records. The SMAC Fall Invite was attended by 380 swimmers from Charlottesville to Roanoke.

One perspective on Mickey Matthews is that he should have been able to decide the day that he left JMU and even had a hand in picking the guy who would sculpt the statue to his tenure. You win a national championship and take a football program at a school that didn’t play football until 1972 to the precipice of FBS, and they eventually name the field after you.

Lt. Gov.-elect Ralph Northam announced on Monday two senior staff hires for his administration and the Co-Chairs of his transition team. Clark Mercer has been named as chief of staff and Michael Matthews as director of constituent services and scheduling.

On Tuesday, Virginia Organizing and other community leaders will gather to show solidarity with undocumented immigrants across the U.S. and raise awareness on immigration reform. A comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship bill was passed by the U.S. Senate in June and has not yet been heard by the House.
