Bath County sheriff’s deputies responded to a non-emergency call for assistance to State Sen. Creigh Deeds’ home on Monday, the day before Deeds was stabbed in an altercation with his son, Gus Deeds, 24, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the attack.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine introduced the Entrance Fee Suspension Act of 2013 today to encourage tourism at national parks and wildlife refuges and bolster local economies that were harmed by the 16-day government shutdown. The bill will assist businesses that lost revenue or were forced to close temporarily during the government shutdown because of national park closures.

More than 1,200 of Virginia’s school buildings and facilities are 40 years or older according to a new study ordered by Gov. Bob McDonnell and concluded at the beginning of this month. The governor ordered the report in August in to demonstrate how a change to the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit could benefit the Commonwealth.

On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. until noon, the Augusta County Historical Society is sponsoring Staunton storyteller and folk musician Bill Wellington in a program on the second floor of the R.R. Smith Center for History & Art. Wellington is hoping that his program, “Poetic Justice,” will finally give this Revolutionary patriot his just due.

The Virginia women’s basketball team (3-1) earned a 61-60 victory at Liberty (0-3) Lynchburg. After Liberty tied the game with 38.2 seconds remaining, Virginia senior guard Ataira Franklin drove baseline with the shot clock winding down, getting fouled in the process. After missing her first free throw, she made the second to give UVa. a one-point edge with 11.3 seconds remaining.

A lot has changed since the last time I had coffee with Creigh Deeds at the Starbucks just off the interstate in Waynesboro in December 2008. At that point, Deeds was running a distant third in a three-way race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, a race that he would eventually win.

Anthony Gill had 18 points (8-9 FG) for Virginia, while Joe Harris had 16 points (7-8 FG), and Mike Tobey and Malcolm Brogdon each had 13 (each 6-10 FG). UVa. shoots 56.6 percent from the field and outrebounds Navy 40-19.

State Sen. Creigh Deeds was stabbed multiple times on his upper torso and head in an attack at his home in Millboro in Bath County Tuesday morning. His son, Gus, 24, also of Millboro, is dead of injuries from a gunshot wound in the same incident.
