The speed limit on a 12-mile section of Interstate 64 in western Albemarle County will increase from 65 to 70 miles per hour on Thursday, Dec. 19. The new speed zone will run from just east of the Greenwood Station Road overpass (Route 690) at milepost 106.1 to just west of the Route 29 interchange at milepost 117.7.

With the 2014 baseball season fast approaching, Virginia outfielders Mike Papi (Jr., Tunkhannock, Pa.) and Brandon Downes (Jr., South Plainfield, N.J.) each were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s 2014 Preseason All-America Team, announced Wednesday by the NCBWA.

At 11:14 a.m. Wednesday, Virginia State Police were called to the scene of a plane crash in Albemarle County. A single-engine Beechcraft crashed landed in the front yard of a house in the 3100 block of Preddy Creek Road.

Republican Mark Obenshain has formally conceded the Virginia attorney-general race. “It’s apparent that our campaign is going to come up a few votes short,” Obenshain said at an afternoon news conference in Richmond after calling Democrat Mark Herring to concede and offer his support.
