AAA offers winter storm safe driving advice

As the season’s first winter storm makes its way to Virginia, AAA urges drivers in affected areas to avoid driving until road conditions improve. “While some have more experience or a more suitable vehicle for snowy road conditions, there is no person or vehicle or amount of driving experience that can make icy roads a safe choice,” said Martha Mitchell Meade, spokeswoman for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

VDOT crews in the Shenandoah Valley have begun around-the-clock staffing for the winter storm that is expected to bring icy conditions through early Monday. Anti-icing operations took place Saturday throughout the Staunton District with a focus on interstates and primary roads, as well as some high-traffic secondary routes.

But Weber was in Waynesboro just the same on Saturday to see Harris (6’5, 180, Glen Carbon, Ill.) score 13 points to help the second-ranked Caissons postgrad basketball team to a 76-63 win over Kiski School (Pa.).

Back-to-back losses in and of themselves are enough reason to worry about Tony Bennett’s reeling UVa. basketball squad. But the way the ‘Hoos lost this week could be cause for big-time concern. What happened this week was that Virginia lost playing its preferred pace against Wisconsin at home, then lost on the road after getting lured into a more up-and-down contest.

UVa. basketball loses at Green Bay, 75-72

UVa. trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half, rallied to tie Green Bay late, then faltered down the stretch in a 75-72 loss Saturday night. The ‘Hoos (7-3) trailed 48-35 with 16:25 to go after a three-pointer by Carrington Love. A pair of Keifer Sykes free throws had it at 60-49 with 8:56 to go. Virginia went on a 20-9 run over the next 7:03.

VMI basketball tops Wright State, 94-74

The VMI Keydets put all five starters in double figures, led by QJ Peterson’s 21 points, and shot 17 of 31 from three-point range to propel their squad to a 94-74 win over the Wright State Raiders Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall. Despite the final score, the game was tightly contested early. Over the first 11:43, there were five ties and 10 lead changes.
