The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Friday that his biennial budget will provide $55.3 million in targeted funding to support public safety around Virginia. The governor’s budget proposals include $22.2 million for sheriffs, Commonwealth’s Attorneys, and Circuit Court Clerk Deputies.

Continuing his administration’s commitment to children in the foster care system and adoption efforts, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Friday his biennial budget will include $27.7 million in new funding for four initiatives targeted at improving foster care adoption.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 13 of 16 days (through Friday) since Thanksgiving. This follows a streak of 15 consecutive daily increases leading up to the holiday. This week the national gas price average dropped a penny to $3.25 cents per gallon Friday, six cents more expensive than one month ago.

The Virginia men’s soccer team saw its 2013 season come to an end Friday evening with a 2-1 loss to Maryland in an NCAA College Cup semifinal match at a chilly PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Seeded eighth in the tournament, Virginia had its season conclude with a 13-6-5 record.

North Central College used an 11-4 second-half spurt to pull away from a 35-35 tie and the Cardinals maintained the lead down the stretch to defeat Bridgewater College, 60-51, on the opening night of the annual Don Glick Classic at Nininger Hall.

The Terry McAuliffe Inaugural Committee announced the first round of parade participants for the inauguration of Terry McAuliffe as 72nd governor of the Commonwealth. “We are excited to announce such a diverse and talented group of parade participants,” said Executive Director Brynne Craig.

Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe nominated former Delegate Brian Moran to serve as Secretary of Public Safety in his administration. Moran spent seven years as a prosecutor in the Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office before entering the House of Delegates, where he sat on the Courts of Justice Committee for his entire 12 years in office.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing concerning proposed improvements to Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) in Augusta County. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad, 10 Manor Road, Stuarts Draft, Va. 24477.
