Frank Wolf, whose congressional district stretches from the Washington, D.C., suburbs to the Northern Shenandoah Valley, will not run for re-election in 2014. The news means there will be an interesting and competitive race for the seat held by the Republican since 1980.

The Virginia women’s basketball team (4-5) defeated Maryland Eastern Shore (3-7) 81-46 Tuesday night (Dec. 17) at John Paul Jones Arena. After UVa trailed 8-0 three minutes into the game, the Cavaliers outscored the Lady Hawks 36-15 in the final 17 minutes of the period, including scoring eight unanswered points in the final 1:14 of the half, to take a 36-23 advantage into the break.

Democrat Mark Herring gained 91 votes on his margin on day one of the statewide recount of ballots in the 2013 Attorney General race. Fairfax County was given a one-day head start on the rest of the state because of the volume of votes that it will need to process for the recount. With one-third of the county’s 240 precincts counted, Herring’s overall state lead had grown to 256 votes over Republican Mark Obenshain.

The City of Staunton has nearly completed a major tree planting project thanks to funding from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Funds were awarded in February 2013 to purchase 70 shade trees for Staunton’s parks, schools, and urban spaces as well as to construct tree planting islands in a downtown parking lot.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Friday that his biennial budget will provide $55.3 million in targeted funding to support public safety around Virginia. The governor’s budget proposals include $22.2 million for sheriffs, Commonwealth’s Attorneys, and Circuit Court Clerk Deputies.

Continuing his administration’s commitment to children in the foster care system and adoption efforts, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Friday his biennial budget will include $27.7 million in new funding for four initiatives targeted at improving foster care adoption.
