U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) led a spirited discussion about college affordability issues in Richmond today with students, parents and guidance counselors. Participants agreed they could benefit greatly if they had more access to better information when making college application and enrollment choices.

WVPT Public Television, serving the Shenandoah Valley and Central and Northern Virginia, announces the premiere of Ethan Bortnick Live in Concert: The Power of Music, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. At 12, Bortnick—the youngest performer ever to headline his own international concert tour—has so far appeared in more than 200 concerts.

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation is embarking on an ambitious project to restore and interpret the Third Winchester battlefield, site of the largest battle ever fought in the Shenandoah Valley – with a goal of completing critical work before the battle’s 150th anniversary next September.

The Rockingham County Fair has been selected to receive three Awards of Distinction from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) headquartered in Springfield, Mo. The competition involved more than 1,100 fairs around the world. The John Deere Excellence in Agriculture Awards will be presented Dec. 10.

I thought about pitching an idea at the Jumpstart Waynesboro event last week. First, for those who missed out on what Jumpstart Waynesboro even is, it’s a partnership with the Staunton Creative Community Fund using $20,000 in state grant money to help push creative, sustainable entrepreneurship ideas in our River City.

Don Short is a member of the WSC Local Council and is also active in the Waynesboro Lions Club. He recognized that the Lions Club, which has an outreach focus of improving vision, could be interested in supporting the VPAS Diabetes Self Management (DSMP) program, as diabetes is a risk factor for vision issues.

There is no program or service for which public dollars can be invested that will have a greater return than those invested in young children. People who work in early childhood and day care programs have known intuitively and anecdotally for a long time that children in their programs were much more likely to be successful by a number of different measures than were children who did not have access to their programs.

More than 1,200 of Virginia’s school buildings and facilities are 40 years or older according to a new study ordered by Gov. Bob McDonnell and concluded at the beginning of this month. The governor ordered the report in August in to demonstrate how a change to the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit could benefit the Commonwealth.
