The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum will hold a birthday celebration Saturday, Dec. 28th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to honor our 28th president. Guests will be able to tour the Presbyterian Manse where Woodrow Wilson was born, discover the life and legacy of our 28th President at the adjacent Museum, and stroll through the lovely historic gardens.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has released recommendations stemming from Health and Human Resource Secretary Bill Hazel’s review of last month’s tragedy in Bath County involving State Sen. Creigh Deeds and his son, Gus. The governor asked the secretary to conduct the review.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, hailed final passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2014 – the annual defense bill that includes important provisions Kaine advocated for Virginia during committee markup of the legislation in June 2013. The measure was passed, 84-15.

Augusta Health accepted applications for single year grants in the fall this year. They requested that the grants address one of the priority areas defined by their recent Community Health Needs Assessment. One of those priorities is diabetes.

Citizen groups, educational institutions, private citizens and local governments within the Chesapeake Bay watershed are encouraged to apply for grants under the “Virginia Trees for Clean Water” program. Grants are awarded through this program for planting riparian buffers or trees in neighborhoods and communities. The grant covers projects to be undertaken and completed during the spring and early fall of 2014.

Patients are more likely to take chronic medications when they meet monthly with pharmacists to coordinate medication schedules and treatments, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University study. The study, published in the November/December issue of The Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA®), described how patient adherence and persistence with chronic medications can be improved.
