Virginia overcame an awful first half – 37.5 percent shooting, 14 turnovers – by getting hot from three in the final 20 minutes on its way to a 69-46 win over Wake Forest on Thursday at JPJ.

UVA (9-6, 1-2 ACC) was 8-of-16 from three-point range in the second half, fueling a 44-point second half.

“It feels good to get a dub on our home court in front of our fans,” coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton said. “I thought we grew up, and we rebounded. We bounced back from our Notre Dame loss, and I thought we played together. Was it a perfect game? No, it’s not going to be, but I think we got better. We have just got to keep taking steps.”

Kymora Johnson (16 points, seven rebounds, eight assists) messed around and almost had a triple-double.

Breona Hurd (15 points, six boards, 3-of-4 from three) and Latasha Lattimore (13 points, seven rebounds) also had good counting numbers.

It’s not saying much for how the 2024-2025 season is going for Virginia that the win over Wake Forest (7-6, 0-2 ACC, NET: 121) is the best win, resume-wise, to date.

The previous best: Green Bay (NET: 122), who UVA defeated 66-61 back on Nov. 28.

The ‘Hoos have just one game the rest of the way against a team ranked 100 or higher in the NET – at Pitt (NET: 156) on Feb. 16.

Better keep taking steps.
