A Waynesboro man died after an accident at a floating dock in a lake in Augusta County.

John Joseph Lacy Jr., 84, of Waynesboro, has been identified as the victim in the accident, which was reported to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

A 911 call logged at 3:10 p.m. reported that a male subject had gone under water and not resurfaced off Mountain Side Lane in the Lyndhurst area of Augusta County.

The incident occurred while the male victim and a friend were on the lake attempting to move a floating dock, according to authorities.

During the process, the boat they were using began taking on water and eventually capsized, throwing both men into the lake.

One male was able to make it out of the water; the second male submerged and did not resurface.

Emergency personnel from Preston Yancey Fire Department, Augusta County Fire and Rescue, Waynesboro First Aid Crew, Waynesboro Fire Department and New Hope Fire Department responded to the scene.

First responders arrived at approximately 3:31 p.m.

The Virginia State Police Search & Rescue and Underwater Recovery Unit also responded to assist in the operation. The submerged victim was located, recovered from the water, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident concluded at 12:42 a.m.
