Waynesboro Public Schools is trying again with another new football coach at Waynesboro High School, announcing Monday the appointment of Nathan Bain, the former coach of the JV program at the high school.
Bain succeeds Shonn Bell, whose single year with the program came with an 0-10 record on the field, ending with his resignation last month after being arrested on a DUI charge.

The school system needs to get this one right, after the disaster that was the move to hire Bell, a Waynesboro native and former NAIA All-American who had a brief career in the NFL, but came with a string of criminal charges on his record.
Bain, whose record is squeaky clean – I checked – led the JV program at Waynesboro High School to 6-4 records in 2021 and 2023, suggesting, if he can re-recruit the athletes that he had coached in ninth and 10th grades to play this fall, who knows, he might have a chance.
“Coach Bain is a passionate and thoughtful leader. He understands that football is more than a game, it’s an opportunity to build character, discipline, and unity. I’m excited to see where he’ll take the program next,” said Jake Peeling, the activities director at WHS.
“Coach Bain represents the best of our community, and he’s committed to the success of our student-athletes both on and off the field. His leadership style is grounded in mentorship, resilience, and long-term relationship-building,” said Jeffrey Cassell, the superintendent of Waynesboro Public Schools.
