washington nationalsA two-out, two-strike, two-run single by Jayson Werth lifted the Washington Nationals to a dramatic 5-4 win over Philadelphia Sunday at Nationals Park.

The win gave Washington (39-24) a three-game sweep of the Phillies (29-34) and a four and a half game lead over the second-place New York Mets (34-28) in the National League East.

The game was tied 3-3 entering the ninth when Markel Franco went deep off Nats closer Jonathan Papelbon (1-2, 3.28 ERA) to put the Phils on top.

Bryce Harper, pinch-hitting, singled to right off Phillies closer Jeanmar Gomez (2-2, 3.13 ERA) with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Danny Espinosa followed with a single, and after Ben Revere, pinch-hitting for Papelbon, lined out to left for the second out, another pinch-hitter, Clint Robinson, walked to load the bases.

Gomez worked the count with Werth to 2-2 before Werth’s single to center scored Harper and Espinosa with the tying and winning runs.
