There are times I think, I’d like to try standup comedy. All you need is, you know, material, which comes with just living, and then, guts, to be willing to expose your innermost thoughts to total strangers.

Such is the art of standup, which is the purview of Dawn and Chris Womack, standup comics in Harrisonburg who are promoting their next four-week course in standup comedy, which is set to begin on Thursday, Feb. 25.

Dawn Womack produces live shows throughout the Shenandoah Valley; Chris Womack is a JMU professor.

Together, they run and perform weekly shows at Massanutten Resort Comedy Club and actively help grow a rising local comedy scene in the Valley.

The course that launches next week is called the Stand-Up & Joke Writing Workshop.

The workshop will help students develop original material, sharpen joke structure, and build the confidence to perform live.

“This class isn’t just about writing jokes,” Dawn Womack said. “It’s about helping people find their comedic voice, take creative risks, and experience what it feels like to make a room laugh.”
