VMI Baseball: Marshall rallies for 7-6 win over Keydets

vmi baseballMarshall rallied for a 7-6 victory Wednesday over VMI in a non-conference game.

VMI scored three runs in the bottom of the first without getting a hit. Callen Nuccio walked, Ryan Smoot was hit by a pitch and Jake Huggins walked to load the bases with no outs. Josh Hollifield plated Nuccio with a groundout, Smoot scored on a wild pitch and Will Knight hit a sacrifice fly to score Huggins.

The Thundering Herd countered with two runs each in the second and third innings to take a 4-3 advantage. The Keydets pushed across three runs in the third to take a 6-4 lead. Knight doubled to drive home a run and Don Goodes had a run-scoring triple.

Marshall sent three runners home in the seventh, the big hit was an Elvis Peralta two-run single.

Hollifield and Knight each drove in two runs for VMI (3-13). Huggins reached base three times with a hit and two walks, and Nuccio was on base twice. Zach Sanders threw two innings of scoreless relief and Seth Nichols, Jon Clines and Sam Ewald each threw one inning without allowing a run.

Zach Inskeep went 2-5 with three RBI and a home run for the Herd (10-5).

The Keydets are slated to host a non-conference three-game series this weekend against Lehigh University, Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
