Virginia (13-5, 4-1 ACC) continues its three-game homestand against North Carolina (11-6, 1-3 ACC) on Monday, Jan. 20. Tipoff at John Paul Jones Arena (14,593) is set for 7 p.m.

The Virginia-North Carolina game will be televised by ESPN as part of ACC Big Monday and online at WatchESPN.com. The game will be broadcast on the Virginia Sports Radio Network and Sirius (Channel 85) and XM (Channel 85) satellite radio stations. Ticket Information

Tickets for the Virginia-North Carolina game may be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com/tickets. Fans may also purchase tickets through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office by telephone and in person. The ticket office is located in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Telephone purchases can be made by calling 1-800-542-8821. Tickets may also be purchased on game day at the JPJ box office starting at 5:30 p.m.

Virginia makes its second straight appearance on ESPN’s ACC Big Monday after losing last Monday (Jan. 13) at Duke (69-65).

Virginia meets North Carolina for the only regular-season meeting of 2013-14.

• Virginia’s 4-1 start in the ACC is its best since starting 4-1 in 1994-95.

• As of Jan. 19, Virginia is tied for second in the ACC at 4-1 and North Carolina is tied for 10th at 1-3.

• The Cavaliers rank fourth in the nation in scoring defense at 56.6 points per game.

• The Cavaliers are 31-44, including a 1-4 mark at John Paul Jones Arena, against UNC in Charlottesville.

• The Cavaliers posted a 61-52 win (Jan. 6) and 93-81 (Feb. 16) loss against the tar heels last season.

Joe Harris scored 27 points, but Virginia fell 93-81 at North Carolina on Feb. 16, 2013.

• Former guard P.J. Hairston scored a career-high 29 points and Marcus Paige added 17 for the Tar Heels, who shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) and hit 13 3-pointers.

Virginia got off to a fast start by making 11 of 13 shots, with six of those coming from 3-point range for a 10-point lead in the first 11 minutes, but struggled to slow the tar heels after halftime.

• Jontel Evans added 12 points and Akil Mitchell had nine points and nine rebounds for the Cavaliers.

 

Last Time Out

Joe Harris scored 18 points and Virginia used an early 22-5 run to take command on its way to a 78-66 victory against Florida State on Saturday and first two-game series sweep against the Seminoles since 2000-01.

• Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points, Mike Tobey had 13 points and two blocks and Justin Anderson added 10 points for the Cavaliers.

Virginia was outrebounded for just the fourth time this season, but committed only nine turnovers and had eight steals.

• The Cavaliers went 7-of-11 from 3-point range, led by Harris’ 4-of-5 effort.

 

About the Cavaliers

Virginia bounced back from its loss at Duke last Monday with a 78-66 win over Florida State on Saturday. The Cavaliers’ swept their two-game season series against the Seminoles for the first time since 2000-01. The Cavaliers are playing their best basketball of the season and their 4-1 start in league play is their best since starting 4-1 in 1994-95.

The Cavaliers’ success has been highlighted by its fourth-ranked defense, rebounding and balanced scoring. The Cavaliers are yielding 56.6 points per game and grabbing 55.4 percent of the rebounds, ruling the glass in 14 of 18 games and enjoying an average rebound margin of +7.8 per game. UVa also ranks 14th in the nation in field goal percentage defense at 37.8 percent.

Virginia is averaging 66.5 points per game, marking their highest total under head coach Tony Bennett. Virginia is averaging 25.1 bench points and has scored 43.3 percent of its points in the paint.

UVa sports a balanced scoring attack, led by All-ACC performer Joe Harris at 11.3 points per game. Harris has hit double figures in scoring in each of the last four games. Malcolm Brogdon is second on the team in scoring (10.8 ppg) and rebounding (5.2 rpg) and has added a team-leading 1.3 steals per game. Brogdon leads UVa in scoring during ACC action at 14.2 points per game.

Versatile guard Justin Anderson has recorded 9.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Anthony Gill, who has led the team in scoring in four games, has registered 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Mike Tobey has chipped in 7.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while Akil Mitchell has added 6.7 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game. Mitchell ranks fourth in the ACC at 9.0 rebounds per game during league play. Freshman point guard London Perrantes leads the Cavaliers with 3.4 assists per game.
