vcu men's basketballVCU basketball coach Mike Rhoades, the 2019 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year, has agreed to a two-year contract extension that runs through 2025, Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin announced Friday.

The revised contract includes an increase in total compensation to $1.5 million in 2019, $1.6 million in 2020 and $1.7 million in 2021. It will also feature a number of program enhancements, including the allocation of an additional $50,000 towards assistant coaches’ salaries.

In his second season as VCU head coach, Rhoades led the Rams to their first outright A-10 regular season title in 2018-19, as well as to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. VCU tied program marks for most regular season (25) and conference (16) wins behind a defense that ranked seventh nationally in efficiency and 10th in points allowed.

For his efforts, Rhoades was also named State Coach of the Year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, as well as a finalist for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award.

Rhoades is 287-151 during a 15-year head coaching career that has also included successful stints at Randolph-Macon and Rice. In addition, Rhoades was an assistant coach at VCU during the Rams’ march to the Final Four in 2011.

VCU and Rhoades will welcome back 11 letter winners, including four starters, in 2019-20.
