Former Florida QB DJ Lagway, a five-star prep recruit in the Class of 2024, is set for a visit with the UVA Football brain trust Monday night, after meeting with the staff at Florida State earlier in the day.
He told Noles247 that he was “on cloud nine” after his visit with FSU, for what that’s worth.
“It was great to come up here and check everything that Florida State has to offer, and I really did love it. It was really nice up here. Yeah, I’m excited for the relationship to continue to build,” Lagway told the website.
The touch with Lagway could be a sign that the UVA folks are hedging on the status of Chandler Morris, the starting QB in 2025, who is petitioning the NCAA for a seventh season.
Lagway is an enticing hedge, on paper – UVA Football doesn’t usually get access to five-star QBs.
But, buyer beware.
He’s a free agent because the coach who recruited him, Billy Napier, couldn’t win with Lagway behind center – the Gators were 10-9 in Lagway starts over the past two seasons.
Napier was fired in October – he landed at JMU – and the new coach, Jon Sumrall, who just led Tulane to a CFP berth, reportedly questioned Lagway’s “competitiveness and work ethic,” leading to his decision to hit the portal.
Initially, it was reported that the likes of Miami, LSU and Baylor were kicking the tires on Lagway; it’s a bit of a comedown to have to talk with FSU, which is coming off back-to-back losing seasons, and, let’s be honest here, Virginia is, at the moment, still just a one-hit wonder.
Lagway’s numbers at Florida were, good? In 2025, as Florida stumbled to a 4-8 record, he passed for 2,265 yards and 16 TDs, with 14 INTs, and had 244 sack-adjusted rushing yards and one TD, with four fumbles.
The nadir was in Week 3, at LSU, in a 20-10 loss, in which Lagway threw five INTs while eating three sacks.
A week late, in a 26-7 loss to Miami, Lagway was 12-of-23 for just 61 yards, and was sacked five times.
He did have nice outings in the 29-21 upset of Texas in Week 5 (21-of-28, 292 yards, two TDs, one INT) and the 24-20 near-miss loss to Georgia in Week 8 (15-of-24, 166 yards, one TD).
I dunno.
