After opening the season with two warmup games, the UVA Basketball team will travel to downtown Baltimore next for a Friday contest against Villanova.

The 5 p.m. ET tip will be part of a doubleheader, with Virginia Tech and Penn State following at 7:30 p.m.

Both games will be at CFG Arena and part of the 2024 Naismith Hall of Fame Series and televised by TNT.

Virginia leads the all-time series with Villanova, 5-3.

In their last meeting, Villanova, which was ranked No. 1 at the time, won at the buzzer, 61-59. The game was played on Jan. 29, 2017, in Philadelphia.

The first game between the two schools occurred in the 1981 NCAA East Regional in the Charlotte Coliseum, with UVA winning, 54-50.

In that game, Virginia trailed most of the contest and did not take the lead in the second half until the final four minutes.

Ralph Sampson led Virginia with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wildcats were coached by Hall of Famer Rollie Massimino, who spent 19 seasons at Villanova, winning 357 games.

Virginia in Charm City

The Cavaliers have not played in Baltimore since defeating Loyola (Md.) on Dec. 30, 1998, 89-70.

The win moved the Cavaliers to 9-4 on the year under first year coach Pete Gillen.

Virginia faltered when ACC play began, finishing 4-12 in the conference and 14-16 overall.

Penn State-Virginia Tech series

The Nittany Lions have beaten the Hokies three times in their last four meetings, but Tech still holds a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series.

In the last meeting, Virginia Tech prevailed 61-59 in the semifinals of the 2022 Charleston Classic, 61-59.

The first-ever clash between the two schools was back in 1921, with the Hokies posting a 29-23 win.
