UVa. trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half, rallied to tie Green Bay late, then faltered down the stretch in a 75-72 loss Saturday night.
The ‘Hoos (7-3) trailed 48-35 with 16:25 to go after a three-pointer by Carrington Love. A pair of Keifer Sykes free throws had it at 60-49 with 8:56 to go. Virginia went on a 20-9 run over the next 7:03, tying the game at 69 with 1:53 left on a three by Malcolm Brogdon.
Greg Mays scored a layup at 1:24 to give the Phoenix (5-2) the lead, and a Brogdon turnover turned into another Green Bay layup by Jordan Fouse that made it 73-69 with 1:13 to go.
A three-pointer by Justin Anderson with 1:00 to go cut the lead to one at 73-72. Virginia had a chance to win after Darion Atkins rebounded a Sykes miss, but Joe Harris missed a three with 12 seconds to go, and Sykes made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to three.
Anderson missed a three with two seconds to go that would have tied the score.
Brogdon led five Virginia scorers in double figures with 17 points, but the sophomore point guard was just 5-of-14 from the field.
Mays led all scorers with 24 points.
Game Notes: Green Bay’s 75 points were a season-high for a Virginia opponent this season, and the Phoenix shot 51 percent from the field for the game and a blistering 7-of-14 (50 percent) from three-point range. UVa. shot 50 percent from the field, but made just five of its 17 shots from long-range. The Cavs also committed 14 turnovers, while the Phoenix committed just eight turnovers.
