Three Augusta County schools were put on lockdown briefly today as the Sheriff’s Office pursued a fugitive who fled on foot in the area of the Fishersville complex.

According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were attempting to serve multiple arrest warrants on Christopher R. Hutchinson, 35, from Staunton, at an apartment complex nearby on Bobby’s Way, when the suspect jumped out of a window and ran away. The incident went down around noon today.

The school complex off Jefferson Highway includes Wilson Memorial High School, Wilson Middle School and Wilson Elementary School. Out of an abundance of caution, the three schools were secured while the deputies searched the area for Hutchinson.

Deputies in the woodland area near Truitt Lane took Hutchinson into custody approximately 40 minutes later.

Hutchinson was taken to Augusta Health due to injuries sustained in the foot pursuit.

Hutchinson was arrested on the following outstanding warrants:

  • 19.2-306 Felony violation of probation from Augusta County Circuit Court.
  • 18.2-456(A)(6) Capias from Waynesboro Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court
  • An additional charge of 18.2-460, Obstruction of Justice was also obtained

A search of online court records shows a series of charges against Hutchinson dating back to 2015 in Waynesboro General District Court, Waynesboro Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court, Staunton General District Court and Augusta County General District Court. The charges range from driving on a suspended license to drug and gun possession. Charges also include fleeing from law enforcement, robbery, failure to pay child support and contempt of court.

Hutchinson is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
