Over the course of human existence, many of us have had to struggle with choosing the proper mattresses for their bedrooms largely because, sometimes, we don’t even know what to look out for. Rather than finding out which mattress composition is right for our sleeping position, bedroom size, and purposes, we all become engrossed in pitting brands against one another – Casper Vs. Purple – wondering which is best and which is not. Well, while it is absolutely cool opting for a reputable brand, we also need to remember that every brand produces different types of mattresses, and as such, it is very much possible for someone to choose an imperfect mattress even from the best mattress brand. What is essential is the composition of the mattress you are getting. In this light, we are now going to intimate you with some of the basic things you have to look out for before you splash the cash on a new mattress.
How to choose the ideal mattress
Typically, there are three common types of mattresses, namely: adjustable, foam, and innerspring. However, over the last couple of years, foam materials have really enjoyed more popularity and usage, thanks in large parts to online retailers and residential apartments. However, beyond the types of mattresses, there are other deterministic factors worthy of consideration too, like the sleep style, sleep position, bedroom size, and lots more. So we are now going to show you how you can choose an ideal mattress for your bedroom.
Do you like a bed with a bounce?
With an innerspring mattress comes that familiar bouncy feeling. If you really like to sleep in a bouncy bed, then this is the type of mattress for you. These types of mattresses often have interconnected coils, each covered with fabric to reduce the ripple effect that happens when a bedfellow on the other side of the bed moves.
Do you like a firmer base?
If you want something more comforting with fewer springs, then memory foam and/or latex mattresses are your best bets. To choose, look at the density and quality, as these two factors will determine how deep you’ll sink when you sleep in it.
Do you sleep on your side?
For side-sleepers, you will want a mattress that not only supports your body weight but also conforms with your body shape. For that reason, you may want to consider innerspring as they have more pressure relief than latex or foam mattresses. However, modern soft foam mattresses are beginning to advance too with certain soft foams boasting built-in pressure relief points around the shoulders and hips position.
Do you sleep on your stomach?
If you sleep on your stomach, the last thing you want is an enveloping memory foam – it would literally suffocate you. For stomach-sleepers, you are better off going for a firm foam, air-filled mattress, or a dense innerspring.
Do you sleep on your back?
If you fall into this category, then you will want something that falls right in the middle – a foam that supports and keeps your spine in a comfy alignment.
Do you have a bedfellow that turns all night?
Sometimes, our choice of mattress can be influenced by our bed partner. Consider getting an innerspring mattress with pocketed coils, memory foam, or latex if you have a partner who simply cannot maintain their position throughout the night.
Do you have a bedfellow whose preferences don’t match with yours?
If your sleeping partner doesn’t fancy your type of mattress or sleeping position, you may be better off getting an air-filled mattress with dual chambers.
Do you sleep hot?
Sometimes, manufacturers have to trade off the cooling properties of mattresses largely because of the numerous layers they have to incorporate (toppers, protectors, and sheets). That said, foam or latex can hold in heat, especially if they are very soft and your body sinks in well enough.
Do you have allergies?
Typically, foam and latex are both renowned for their antimicrobial properties. They are also known to be dust, mites, and mold resistant. If you have allergies and you are opting for innerspring, be sure to encase it in an allergen-resistant sheet/cover to keep irritants at bay.
