The Strong Families/Great Youth Coalition has been awarded a Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant. The $121,150 grant is to be used by the Health Education and Awareness program, part of RMH Community Health, to focus on decreasing alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes in Rockingham County among 15-24 year olds.

SPF SIG is a grant program under the direction of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Programs help deliver and sustain effective substance abuse and mental health services. Programs also aim to prevent childhood and underage drinking, reduce substance abuse-related problems, build capacity and reduce the progression of substance abuse. The SPF SIG prioritized communities in Virginia with the highest number and per capita rates of alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes among 15-24 year olds.

The Strong Families/Great Youth Coalition, a fiscal agent of Rockingham Memorial Hospital, is a not-for-profit organization with a membership including youth, parents, media, city and county school officials, law enforcement, business leaders, health care professionals, civic/volunteer groups and youth-serving organizations. The coalition’s mission is to reduce adolescent substance abuse and the related public health and safety issues in Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County in order to build a community supporting and encouraging youth to make healthy decisions. Coalition meetings are open to all community members and are held at 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at WVPT on Port Republic Road.
