Staunton kicks off National Library Week April 8

The Staunton Public Library will join libraries nationwide next week in celebrating the many ways libraries lead their communities through the transformative services, programs and expertise they offer.

April 8 through 14 is National Library Week, an annual celebration of the life-changing work of libraries, librarians and library workers. Libraries aren’t just places to borrow books or study—they’re also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies and develop their skills and passions.

“The library helps lead our community by advocating for widespread access to crucial services and lifelong learning,” said Sarah Skrobis, the library’s director. “Libraries level the playing field for people of any age who seek information and access to technologies to improve their quality of life.”

Staunton will celebrate the week in several ways:

Fine Forgiveness

Simply ask, and your overdue fine will be waived. Charges for lost or damaged items and collection processing fees will not be waived.

Art Exhibit

The work of local artist Gene Provenzo will be on display at the library. His exhibit includes collage pieces representing classic books such as “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Fahrenheit 451.”  Visitors can play a guessing game to figure out which piece of art represents each book.

Book Recommendations by City Leaders

Members of City Council and the city manager will each share a book that has left a lasting impression on them in a Libraries Lead Facebook campaign. Stay tuned to the library’s Facebook page to see their recommendations throughout the week.

Membership Drive

The Friends of the Staunton Library will encourage residents to become members. The Friends of the Staunton Library is a non-profit organization that provides volunteer support and raises funds that enhance the programming, technology and collections of the Staunton Public Library.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
