Senate Democratic leaders respond to McAuliffe budget

va democratsIn response to Governor McAuliffe’s unveiling today of his proposed biennial budget, Senate Democrats made the following statements.

Said Sen. Janet Howell (D – Reston), ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, “I am pleased that Gov. McAuliffe is strengthening public education. Important investments like these will improve quality of life and economic development. As we work on the budget, I hope we’ll maintain these investments and work across party lines to ensure all Virginians have access to quality healthcare.”

Said Democratic Leader Sen. Dick Saslaw (D – Fairfax), “This proposed budget builds on our commitment to make Virginia the best place in which to raise a family or start a business. I commend Gov. McAuliffe for seeking new investments in our transportation system, education, and workforce development. I am also very pleased to see efforts to better help our veterans and expand access to health care. These common-sense proposals provide a strong foundation as the General Assembly continues to work on the budget.”

Said Caucus Chair Sen. Donald McEachin (D – Henrico), “I’m pleased to see the governor’s efforts to improve economic security and quality of life for Virginia families. This budget calls for more teachers in our schools, more affordable access to higher education, and economy-boosting improvement to our top-notch research universities. These proposals will lift families out of poverty, help attract and grow businesses, and move us forward. I urge my Republican colleagues to support these proposals — and to at last support the governor’s efforts to expand access to health care, which Virginia working families need and deserve.”
