Schmidt headlines Staunton Music Festival event this weekend

Harpsichordist Carsten Schmidt will perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 7 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 14 N. Lewis St., Staunton.

Schmidt continues his traversal of the six Partitas of Johann Sebastian Bach with a performance of numbers three, five and six.

As conductor, harpsichordist and pianist, Schmidt enjoys a versatile musical career and performs extensively throughout Europe, Japan and North America. He has appeared at such venues as the Ravinia Festival, International Schubert Festival in Amsterdam, the German Mozart Festival, the Finnish Kuhmo Festival, Merkin Hall in New York City, Kennedy Center, and Kaleidoscope Festival in Moscow, and he has been heard in radio broadcasts worldwide. Since 2004 he has also conducted opera productions of Handel and Purcell, and Baroque concerto programs. He holds artist diplomas from the Folkwang Institute (Germany) and Indiana University, as well as a doctorate from Yale. Since 1998 he has been Professor of Music at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.

Tickets are $18 for general admission; $15 for seniors; and $8 for students.
