Right to work amendment on Virgina ballot in November

right to work billThis afternoon, the Virginia Senate passed HB4 and HJ2 on party-line votes. Together, the bill and resolution seek to incorporate a version of Virginia’s existing right to work law into the state constitution.

Having passed both chambers in two consecutive years, the proposed amendment will appear on the ballot this November to be ratified or rejected by voters.

Said Senator John Edwards (D-Roanoke),  “Right to work has been in the Code of Virginia for over 70 years and no one is trying to change that. The proposed referendum is un-needed, a waste of time and a waste of taxpayers’ dollars.”
Said Senator Dave Marsden (D-Fairfax), “The legislature should be focusing on much more important, substantive issues – like how to strengthen our schools and economy and how to expand access to healthcare. Right to work has been Virginia law since 1940. Adding this to our Constitution is unnecessary.”
