An unidentified Charlottesville man suffered life-threatening injuries after a Monday-afternoon accident on Interstate 64 in Albemarle County.
At 5:39 p.m. Monday, Virginia State Police Senior Trooper D.L. Keaton was called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on I-64 at the 102 mile marker on Afton Mountain.
A 2003 BMW was traveling east on I-64 when it ran off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail. The BMW then came back across the eastbound lanes and struck an embankment off the left side of the road. The BMW traveled up the 6-foot embankment, became airborne, rolled upside down, and struck the top of the trailer of a westbound tractor-trailer. The impact tore the BMW in two.
The driver of the BMW was thrown from the car. He was transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. State police are in still in the process of reaching his family, so we are not releasing his name at this time. I can confirm that he is an adult male from Charlottesville.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, an adult male from South Carolina, was not injured. The tractor-trailer was loaded with rolls of paper…all of which remained intact inside the trailer.
