A new national poll from Marquette University has Vice President Kamala Harris with an eight-point lead on ex-president Donald Trump, a dramatic turn in a race that had been Trump’s to lose just a few weeks ago.

The poll has Harris at 50 percent, Trump at 42 percent, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 6 percent, Libertarian Party nominee Chase Oliver at 1 percent, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein at 1 percent.

What’s changed: the enthusiasm of Democratic voters.

A May poll had just 34 percent of Democrats reporting themselves to be “very enthusiastic” about voting in November, but the new poll has 55 percent on the “very enthusiastic” train, which mirrors the consistent enthusiasm of Republican voters – 55 percent having reported themselves “very enthusiastic” in May, and 58 percent at the “very enthusiastic” level in the new poll.

Eighty-seven percent of Democratic voters reported that they think President Biden should have dropped out of the race, and 87 percent report themselves as “very” or “somewhat” satisfied with Harris as the party nominee.

A telling number from the poll: if Biden was still in the race, Trump would have had a 47 percent to 43 percent lead on the president, with the independents splitting the other 11 percent.
