New Generals coach Mike Bocock ‘happy to be in Waynesboro’

Chris Graham

The 2013 season will be the 25th Valley League summer for Waynesboro Generals head coach Mike Bocock. But it’s year number one for Bocock in Waynesboro, and the change in scenery seems to be giving Bocock a new lease on coaching life.

“I’m ready. I’ve been ready since I walked off the field in Luray, and since we ended up getting rained out in the playoffs last year. This is my 25th year, and I’m glad … I can’t wait,” said Bocock after his team’s 10-6 exhibition win over the Stuarts Draft Diamondbacks of the Rockingham County Baseball League on Wednesday.

The Generals open the 2013 VBL season on Friday against rival Staunton. The two-time defending South Division champions come in with high expectations with Bocock now at the helm. Bocock’s teams have won 560 games, 10 Valley League regular-season titles and six playoff championships.

The numbers come with a lot of hard work, like the kind that Bocock had his team doing after the win over Stuarts Draft Wednesday night. Two and a half hours of baseball followed by wind sprints – that’s how you win games in August in the VBL.

“All of these guys want to work hard, they want to play,” Bocock said. “As soon as we get the rest of the guys in, the guys playing in the regionals, we’ve got nine guys playing in the regionals, we’ll get those guys in, and we’ll form a good ballclub. I’m really happy to be in Waynesboro.”
