Local Food presentation in Staunton Thursday night


WHAT: “How Staunton Can Become the Local Food Capital of the East Coast” presentation by City Councilman Erik Curren followed by discussion. Free and Open to the Public. Refreshments served.

staunton2editsWHO: Curren convened the Staunton Food Policy Task Force in October 2012 and recently presented the group’s recommendations to Staunton City Council. Sponsored by Transition Staunton Augusta (which also operates the Newtown Community Garden on West Beverley St), this event will allow the public to see the presentation that Curren and Councilwoman Andrea Oakes gave when they submitted the food proposals to City Council.

WHEN: Thursday, Nov. 7 from 7-8:30 pm

WHERE: Staunton Public Library, 1 Churchville Ave, Upstairs Meeting Room

WHY: In today’s economy, too many Staunton families still suffer from food insecurity. Our citizens also need more jobs and business opportunities. And families increasingly want healthier food. Local food is one of the biggest national trends of recent years and it offers promising opportunities to deal with hunger, create jobs and help people live healthier lives. Staunton is uniquely poised to become a center for local food, supporting local businesses and attracting tourists, but only if we coordinate our efforts. Curren will discuss how Staunton can match and surpass other Virginia cities that are riding the local food wave to food security, prosperity, and better health.
