Liberty shuts out No. 8 North Carolina, 2-0

liberty baseballFlames catcher Jonathan Embry belted a two-run home run and Mason Meyer and Evan Brabrand combined to shut down the visiting Tar Heels, as Liberty defeated No. 8-ranked North Carolina 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

Embry ripped a two-out home run, his second of the season, over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth with center fielder Jaylen Guy aboard to plate the contest’s only runs.

Meyer, 3-2, pitched six scoreless innings, scattering five hits. The left-hander worked out of a no-out bases-loaded jam in the third.

Brabrand came on in the seventh inning and finished the contest to earn his sixth save. The right-hander gave up two hits over the final three innings. He struck out a pinch hitter representing the tying run in the ninth.

Liberty improves 15-5 on the year. The Flames have won four out of their last five. North Carolina drops to 16-6 overall.
