The buzz in conservative media is that former Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper, a Democrat, now regrets that she voted for Obamacare.
Dahlkemper is Roman Catholic, and she says she didn’t realize that Obamacare would force “all private insurers, including Catholic charities and hospitals, to provide free coverage of contraception, sterilization procedures, and the “week-after” pill.”
Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte, seeking his 11th term, voted several times to fund Obamacare, most recently last spring. Perhaps, like Democratic Congresswoman Dahlkemper, he didn’t read the bill he was voting to fund.
It wouldn’t be the first time Bob says something conservative, and then acts like a New England liberal.
When he visits the valley, Mr. Goodlatte tells us that he really, really, really wants to cut federal spending – if we would just “make” him, with a “balanced budget” amendment to the Constitution. He talks about a free market, while advising everyone from farmers to food banks to become ever more dependent on government, and to apply for more federal handouts.
He tells the pro-life community that he is with them on valuing life, except when he votes to pay for Obamacare and for Obama’s military adventures abroad.
When Bob introduced the recent SOPA bill to mandate both commercial and government blackouts of American websites without judicial oversight or due process, he claimed it would save hundreds of thousands of jobs. Those numbers are highly questionable. He said what he said because that’s what his big backers in Hollywood and the pharmaceutical industry told him to say. Not surprisingly, Goodlatte was number 19 on the list of the top 25 recipients of lobbying money for this now-dead bill – 18 of which were big name Democrats, including infamous liberals Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
Bob tells people in the Valley that he is conservative, that he has our liberty in mind, that he knows the Constitution, and is a pro-life fiscal conservative.
Most of the Sixth District stopped believing Bob when he abandoned his term limit promise. I stopped believing Bob was conservative when he tried to push the USDA’s National Animal Identification System (the NAIS) down our throats a few years ago. These days, everyone I know has an “I don’t believe Bob Goodlatte” story.
We need a genuine conservative in Washington, fighting for limited government in Washington, and liberty in the Shenandoah Valley. I don’t know if Bob ever fit that bill, but I know for sure he doesn’t today.
