As part of the Interstate 81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project, there will be frequent southbound single lane closures during the week of March 28. Lane closures for March 31 have just been announced. The I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project is located in the I-81 southbound lanes, south of Staunton near exit 217 at Route 654 in the Mint Spring area and exit 213 at Route 11 in the Greenville area.

On March 30 and 31 from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. portions of the left shoulder and left southbound lane of I-81 will be closed between exit 217 and exit 213. Crews will be strengthening the shoulder area to support traffic in preparation for the closure of the right travel lane for extensive milling and paving work.

Also during this week, weather permitting, the I-81 southbound right lane is scheduled to close 24 hours-a-day from April 1 at 9 p.m. to April 7 at 7 a.m. between exit 217 and exit 213 for milling and paving work. This is the second of eight planned 24 hours-a-day closure periods. Drivers of tractor trailer trucks should use the left lane and drivers of passenger vehicles are requested to use the primary detour: Traffic will leave I-81 southbound at exit 217 onto Route 654 (White Hill Road) westbound to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Motorists will turn left onto Route 11 southbound and re-enter I-81 at exit 213.

Route 800 (Folly Mills Station Road/Springfield Lane), which is just off of Route 654 and Route 11 will be closed at its connections with Route 654. Only the Route 11 intersections will be open for Route 800 traffic during the 24 hour-a-day I-81 lane closure period.

All work is weather permitting. If crews complete their work early, lanes may reopen sooner than stated.

Visit www.VirginiaI-81Pave.org for project information. The I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project valued at $7.6 million was awarded by Commonwealth Transportation Board on Dec. 8, 2010 to Lanford Brothers Co. of Roanoke Completion is scheduled for November 2011.
