A contractor planted more than 10,000 trees on City of Harrisonburg-owned tree farm this spring as part of an effort by the city to meet its climate goals.

The city will have more than 30,000 new trees on the tree farm by 2028, with the plan being to have the site remain forested in perpetuity.

The initiative supports the city’s commitment to meeting its 2028 pollution reduction requirements under the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load Action Plan.

“This project is a great way to reduce pollution flowing to the Chesapeake Bay while also expanding forest habitat in our region,” said Keith Thomas, the city’s public works sustainability and environmental manager.
