Here we go again: Squirrels losing skid now at 12

The Flying Squirrels (10-28) were blanked, 2-0 by the Trenton Thunder (21-16) for their 12th consecutive losson Wednesday morning at Arm & Hammer Park.

Cale Coshow out dueled Adalberto Mejia as the Squirrels were shutout for just the second time this season. Richmond managed to out-hit the Thunder for the second consecutive night but are still in jeopardy of being swept. The series will conclude on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. The Squirrels return home on Friday, May 20th with a Free Shirt Friday & Happy Hour. The promotional schedule can be found here.  

Both stating pitchers were in control for most of the day. Myles Schroder led off the game with a base hit to left field off Cale Coshow ,but was erased on a double play.  Coshow then retired nine consecutive batters until Austin Slate snapped that stretch with a base hit to right in the fourth.

Squirrels lefty Adalberto Mejia was also fluid through the first several innings. Mejia did not allow a hit until Sebastian Valle singled to open up the fifth inning. Mejia was quickly able to erase the single with a double play and needed just 57 pitches to get through five shutout innings

Richmond was able to get multiple runners on base for the first time off Coshow in the sixth inning. Myles Schroder reached on a bunt base hit and Christian Arroyo singled. With two outs, Ricky Oropea walked to load the bases. Hunter Cole then ripped a hot shot to second base that was flagged by Cito Culver to stand the bases full.

The Thunder finally broke through against Mejia in the sixth with a pair of hits to take a 1-0 lead. Cito Culver double with one out to right field and Dustin Fowler brought him home with a base hit to right   Trenton added another run in the seventh and penultimate inning for Mejia. Sebastian Valle worked a walk, advanced to second on a base hit and scored on a Dan Fiorito double for a 2-0 edge. Mejia (0-1) allowed just the two runs on six hits with six strikeouts but suffered the loss He was removed for reliever Jake Smith with a runner on and one out in the eighth inning. Smith retired the only two batters he faced.

Coshow departed after tossing a career-high seven innings in his 8th start of the season. The big righty allowed the five hits one no runs with a pair of strikeouts in the win. Reliever Alex Smith retired the side in the eighth inning and Tyler Jones earned the save with a scoreless ninth.

Richmond concludes the road trip in Trenton on Thursday at 7:00 PM. LHP Andrew Suarez is scheduled to start against Trenton LHP Daniel Camarena.
