The Center for Innovative Technology announced this week the release of broadband awareness and adoption resources filled with strategies to assist local and regional governments in expanding “the 21st century infrastructure that enhances a community’s economic opportunities and quality of life.”
Based in large part on findings from work done by CIT Broadband officials in King and Queen County and other jurisdictions, the strategies focus on the following goals:
- Increasing awareness of non-adopters of broadband to help them understand the benefits and services available on the internet.
- Making broadband relevant for non-adopters by making beneficial services available online, thereby giving them a reason to get online.
- Addressing costs to make it easier for people to access broadband services.
- Continue working with communities to improve the availability of broadband services in “dark” areas where service is not currently available.
The detailed strategies are targeted to specific groups and are intended to provide local and regional officials with community-based programs to achieve these goals, which will in turn increase overall broadband adoption within communities and regions. Sandie Terry, Program Manager of CIT Broadband, said, “These strategies supplement the information in our workshops and online that help communities overcome obstacles to broadband access by educating community leaders on strategies to achieve improved broadband adoption.
