Charges against a Virginia man police say is responsible for a shooting on Interstate 85 have been upgraded to first-degree murder.
On Tuesday, a Mecklenburg County grand jury indicted Jason A. Glidewell II, 20, with a litany of additional charges that included two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, felony homicide, shooting a firearm from a vehicle, maliciously shooting at a vehicle, reckless handling of a firearm and unlawfully shooting/wounding a person while committing a felony.
Glidewell was taken into custody for the shooting just days after the fatal shooting of Hunter A. Bates, formerly of Colonial Heights.
The shooting occurred along I-85 northbound at the five mile marker in Mecklenburg County at 3:47 p.m. on Aug. 28.
Troopers responding to the incident located a Honda Civic that had gone off the right side of the road and came to rest in a culvert. The driver, Bates, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Virginia State Police.
Glidewell was taken into custody without incident on Sept. 3. He was initially charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with the shooting.
Glidewell is currently being held at Meherrin River Regional Jail.
